The North Carolina State Archives, Raleigh
The State Archives retains many of the important documents, photographs, veterans interviews, and maps associated with the history of North Carolina. Students are encouraged to come make use of these materials. The state coordinator will be happy to help you set up an appointment.
Libraries and Archives
North Carolina has many wonderful research libraries and archival facilities. Explore the ones in your area. Talk to the reference librarian in your local library to get information on the types of materials available there. If you are located near a college or university, chances are that you can find information about their libraries and research facilities online.

Historical Societies, Historic Sites, and Museums
Cultural organizations such as the ones listed above generally have records, artifacts, and buildings that can be used for your research. A list of many such institutions in the state can be found at NCECHO. Remember that visits to historic sites related to your topic may be primary sources and can be listed in your bibliography.
Civic Organizations and Businesses
Most businesses and organizations maintain records related to their corporate history. If your topic relates to such organizations, call and see what records they may have available for you to examine.
Music
This is an area that is often overlooked by students. Music created during a particular period often tells a story and can contribute to the feel of your project. Explore sources of music related to the time period you are studying. There are various cds available at retail stores with music from the 20th century. Some music from earlier periods can be found online.

Documenting the American South
This site contains many documents related to the history of the South from its earliest exploration until 1940. There are several collections, including one dealing specifically with North Carolina and several that have accounts from the South in general. The collections can be explored by topic or by individual names.
Our Documents
The National Archives, in cooperation with National History Day, has created a site with 100 milestone documents from American History. On this site you will find a digital copy of the original document as well as a transcription.
American Journeys
This is a collection of eyewitness accounts of early American exploration and settlement.
Library of Congress
The Library of Congress has many digitized images of documents and photographs related to various periods of the country's history.
National Archives
The National Archives has many digitized images of documents and photographs related to various periods of the country's history.
The Internet Classics Archives
This site includes 441 works by classical authors.
